Day 209

Matthew 5

Reading Jesus' sermon again today, it struck me just how difficult all of it must have sounded in the ears of his listeners that day. The original law was hard enough. But most of what Jesus calls them to is nearly impossible, if not outrageous. Don't be angry with people. Love your enemies. Don't swear. Turn the other cheek. Gouge out your eye. Don't lust...And then He says that if you aren't at least as righteous as the most righteous people at that time, you don't enter the kingdom of God. Not an extremely encouraging message. Unless you view it in light of grace. Through Christ, God's righteousness is given to us. That's the difference. And that's what makes following Jesus a life of freedom and not bound to the law.
