In the account of the rich young ruler, most of time we think he failed the test when he walked away from Jesus and wouldn't give up his wealth. But it was before that. When Jesus gives him the list of commandments for him to keep, he quickly replies "I've done all that." Wrong. You haven't. Neither have I. Then he asks "What else can I do?" He's looking for something else. He should have been humbled before Jesus asking for mercy from God because he was so wretchedly sinful. Jesus pointed it out to him and he breezed right over it. Until he comes to grips with his position before God, nothing will save him. That's where he failed the test. Repentance always precedes salvation.
