Top 10 Misunderstood Bible Passages

Faithful blog readers: I have an assignment I'd like your help on. I'm in the process of creating another "spin the wheel" message like Ed did a few months ago. If you're unfamiliar with the concept, it goes like this: We put a big wheel on stage with 10 topics on it. We spin the wheel and wherever it lands, the speaker talks about that topic for about 5 minutes until the shot clock goes off. Then we spin again and do another one. Here's what I'm thinking. I want to talk about verses from the Bible that Christians misquote or misunderstand or basically get goofed up most of the time. For example: When people do something wrong, they love to quote Jesus when He said "Judge not" and they use that to say that nobody should be making judgment calls on anybody's behavior...ever. But that's not at all what Jesus meant. You get the idea? I need the best 10 of those that I can get. So go to the comments and have at it. If you know the verse reference, please include it. If not, just describe the verse as best you can or go here and you can search to your heart's content.

This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it-Psalm 118:24

This verse is used a lot during praise and worship meaning that TODAY was made special by the Lord, and we should rejoice in this gift from the Lord. This is true but it is not what the verse is talking about. Read the ENTIRE passage from Psalm 118:22-24.
This passage is not telling us to rejoice in just ANY day, but to rejoice in the day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ!

I Cor. 6:19. I've heard this verse quoted in a sermon to encourage people stay in good physical condition and a join a health club, as if that is an indicator of commitment to Christ. It has to do with sexual sin.

Ok Revelation 13-14.. re: the mark of the beast being calculated by insightful persons, I had someone insightful show me this, and it makes total sense..and it totally gave me the chills....In roman..the number six is represented by VI...in Thai, the number six is represented by a symbol that very closely resembles an s....in Farsi, a symbol identical to an a... all together, you have VIsa...so not being able to buy or sell (worldwide)without this number makes complete sense. When I was told, I got chills because it DID make sense. The government already has capability to implant this info and want to do so. FOR IT IS MAN'S NUMBER!!! I think it is important to really talk about Revelation, even though it is a bit terrifying to some who don't fully understand it.I still don't fully understand it...there are certain things we can do to prepare, and we should prepare..I know we will join God during this time, but not everyone will, and you just don't hear about this "publicly"..why is that??

No offense, Anonymous, but you're stretching it quite a bit. That whole scripture about taking a mark on your hand and buying and selling is a direct reference to the government of Nero that was in place at the time John wrote Revelation. Nero forced everyone to wear his mark and worship him before they could buy or sell in the markets. When the people John was writing to first read Revelation, that is no doubt what they would have understood. God is encouraging them not to bow the knee to Nero but to stay faithful to Christ. So the reason you won't hear us at CCC publicly preaching about Visa credit cards being the mark of the beast is because they are most definitely not.
