Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. Hebrews 5:8 (NLT)
If you let the reality of that hit you, you almost have to read it twice. Jesus, even though He was God in the flesh, still had something He needed to learn. But notice, it wasn't knowledge that Jesus needed. So it wasn't like one day He woke up and all of a sudden knew something that He didn't know before. Through His experiences in this life, specifically His moments of suffering, Jesus was trained in how to obey. Suffering was a tool that God used to give Jesus the opportunity to obey or disobey. And through that experience, Jesus learned not just how to obey but the advantages of obedience. Which brings me to the "so what" for me (and maybe you too).
If God thought Jesus needed suffering in order to learn obedience...how much more do I need it? And how does that change my attitude toward suffering? When I run into something that's difficult in this life, do I complain or do I learn?
