Question #5: What does 1 Peter 3:19 mean?

1 Peter 3:18-19 is one of those scriptures that honestly no one knows for sure exactly what it means. So I won't try to explain what countless scholars can not. You can search through commentaries of the Bible and find all of the explanations and form your own opinion. But what is important is this. Don't allow "problem passages" or verses that confuse you to override the context of what the author is trying to say.

Read the entire section. Peter is talking to a group of people who are suffering for doing good. He's trying to sustain them in the midst of their suffering. And he uses the example of Jesus who endured suffering even though He didn't deserve it and God vindicated Him by exalting Him. Christ followers should look to Him as our hope that God will do the same for us. If you focus too much on one phrase that is a little confusing, sometimes you miss the point.
