Why did Jesus have to die?

Why did Jesus have to die so that God could forgive us of our sins?

If someone asked you that question, how would you answer? It doesn't work that way anywhere else. Whenever someone does me wrong and they ask for forgiveness, I don't go around killing people in order to make it happen. I just forgive. So why is God different? What makes it necessary for someone to die for sin?
