I didn't always know it but, over time, I've totally learned the truth contained in verses 7-9. No matter what you do, there are always critics. People who just can't stand you or anything you stand for and they let you know it. I used to think I needed to go right at those folks and try to change their minds. Generally speaking, that never happens. Usually you end up with more conflict and everybody just digs their heels in deeper. People like this aren't listening to you to learn or to see things from another perspective. They're looking for ammunition they can use to support their opinion. Focusing on them usually ends up causing more harm than good. I think I used to spend too much time in writing messages thinking about how critics would hear what I'm saying and I would speak directly to them. Not that you shouldn't confront when you know something's off track. But these days I'm a little more conscious of the people I actually have a shot at influencing. People who aren't looking for an argument but for truth. That's usually a much more productive way to teach.
