I don't think most people view suffering the way Paul does. He says that the more we suffer the more we receive God's comfort. And when we are comforted, we will be able to comfort others. So it's as if we are suffering for the sake of others. Hard times become like an education for us and as we learn and feel our way through it, we possess more of the kind of comfort others need from God. Looking back on the toughest trial of my life, I can say that's true. I have things in me now that I can offer parents who lose children that I never had before it happened to me.
