A few nights ago, I was doing a bedtime Bible reading with our daughter and the devotion was on verse 4 of this chapter. And I was so glad that the writer explained it correctly because I've heard so many people get it wrong. Most people take it to mean if you follow God then He'll give you whatever your heart desires. That's only a partial interpretation of what that verse really means. The truth is that if you follow God, then the desires of your heart start to change. They become less about what you want and more about what God wants for you. You focus less on filling selfish wants and become more focused on doing His will. In that context, God will certainly give you the desires of your heart because your heart is right. But if God gave us the desires of our heart while our hearts were after selfish, sinful or damaging things - what kind of loving Father would that be? Want what God wants and He will give it to you. I hope my daughter gets that.
